Return-to-work planning tool
Breast Milk Stash Calculator for Returning to Work
Estimate a planning target from the amount your baby typically uses during a separation. Compare it with your current usable stash and, if you choose, calculate a daily pace before work or daycare begins.

How the stash calculation works
The calculator multiplies the milk used during one typical separation by the number of separation days you want to cover, then adds only the custom buffer you enter. Your current usable stash is subtracted to show the remaining gap.
There are no hidden intake, waste, age, or weight assumptions. The result is a planning estimate based on your entries—not a prediction of what your baby medically needs.
How much milk do you actually need stored?
A freezer full is not the goal. Many families plan a first-day bridge, then use milk pumped on one workday for the next. Others choose a larger reserve because it fits their routine. Start with observed bottle use, choose the number of days that makes sense for you, and adjust after a practice separation.
Build and rotate your stash without overbuilding
- Practice the actual separation routine before the first work or daycare day when possible.
- Label milk clearly and use the oldest suitable milk first.
- Test previously frozen milk before depending on a large frozen supply.
- Recalculate when the observed amount or your reserve preference changes.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a freezer full of breast milk?
Not necessarily. This tool starts with the number of separation days you personally want to cover rather than assuming a giant stash.
Can I use this for daycare?
Yes. Enter the amount used during a typical daycare-length separation and the number of daycare days you want stored. Confirm the daycare's current handling and labeling policies separately.
What if I pump about what my baby drinks?
A one-day bridge may fit a pump-today, feed-tomorrow routine. Choose a larger reserve only if it supports your own contingency plan.
What if my stash is already above the target?
The result shows the amount above your selected target. It does not suggest that you need to keep increasing it.
